However, 90% of the Gospel of John is only found in John. In fact, over 90% of the Gospel of Mark is also found in the Gospel of Matthew, the Gospel of Luke, or both. Matthew, Mark, and Luke come from a similar point of view with similar, or even word-for-word, stories at times. (Mt 14:6-12, Mk 6:17-29, and Lk 7:18-25)īiblical scholars have long realized that the Gospel of John is very different from the other three Gospels. Though he was uncomfortable with the decision, Herod had no choice but to order the beheading of John the Baptist. After conversing with her vengeful mother, Salome requested the head of John the Baptist on a platter. However, after a delightful dance at a banquet by Salome, the daughter of Herodias, Herod publicly proclaimed his willingness to give the girl anything she wanted, up to and including half of the entire kingdom. Herod was afraid of him as he believed John was a prophet, so at first he only imprisoned John. This public shame made Herodias furious, and she had her new husband, Herod Antipas, arrest John the Baptist. Since John had the masses visiting him for baptism, they listened to his criticism of the behavior of Herod and Herodias. It's rather complicated, but, more importantly, it was against the laws laid out in the book of Leviticus. John the Baptist was critical of Herod Antipas divorcing his wife and marrying his brother's divorced wife, Herodias.
